Sending a parcel with a traveler means finding someone who is already going your way, agreeing on the terms and handing the item over in person. Below is the whole process: how it works on Parcelane, what to settle in advance and how to protect yourself from fraud.
How it works
The sender posts a request, the traveler posts a trip, and the two of them agree directly. Parcelane helps two people find each other: we do not carry parcels, process payments or take part in the handover.
Parcelane is free, with no commission. You agree on the reward with the traveler yourselves, and some travelers take small items for free.
This works for things one person can easily take along: documents, a gift, clothes, small electronics with a receipt, medicine with a prescription. Bulky freight or batches of goods are not for travelers.
Step 1. Describe the parcel and the route
Start with a request: from where, to where, by what date and what exactly needs to go. It takes a minute, and a request cannot be published without a photo.
- Choose the departure and destination cities and the date you need the parcel delivered by.
- Describe the contents honestly: what it is, how many items, approximate weight and value.
- Attach real photos of this exact item, not a picture from the internet.
- If you are ready to pay for delivery, state the reward.
You can create a request right after signing up. New requests and trips are moderated and appear in the feed once checked.
Step 2. Find a traveler
There are two ways: find a trip yourself or wait for a traveler to respond to your request. Doing both works best.
- Open the trips feed or the route pages and look for people going your way on suitable dates.
- Trips can include stops along the way, so someone flying with a connection can take your parcel on one of the legs.
- Message the traveler in the Parcelane chat. Keep it short: what the parcel is, from where to where, by when.
Check the profile before you talk. Some users have a verified phone number, shown with a mark. Reviews on Parcelane appear only after a completed delivery and moderation, so they cannot be faked in advance.
Step 3. Agree on the terms
Settle everything important in the chat before you meet, not on the spot. The conversation on the platform stays with you as a record of what you agreed.
What to agree on in advance
- What exactly is going. Contents, size and weight. The traveler needs to know whether it fits in their luggage.
- The reward and how it is paid. The amount and when it is paid. We do not process payments between users, so this arrangement stays between the two of you.
- Where and when you meet in the departure city.
- Who receives the parcel and where in the destination city: the recipient's name, contact and how they will meet.
- Documents. If the item needs a receipt, prescription or permit, prepare it in advance and hand it over with the parcel.
- What happens if plans change: a rescheduled flight or a cancelled trip.
The traveler is responsible for what they carry across the border, so they may refuse any item, even at the meeting. That is normal and not worth arguing about.
Step 4. Meeting and inspection
Hand the parcel over in person, in a public place, and always show the contents. The traveler inspects every item before taking it: on Parcelane this is a condition of use, not a suggestion.
- Meet where there are plenty of people: a café, a shopping mall, a station or airport hall.
- Bring the item unsealed, or pack it so that it is easy to open and close again. Travelers do not accept sealed boxes, bags or packages.
- Compare the contents with the description and photos in the request.
- The traveler should check that the person in front of them matches the profile.
If everything matches, the traveler takes the parcel. If something does not match or raises doubts, they may refuse and do not have to explain why.
Step 5. Delivery and confirmation
The traveler carries the parcel personally and hands it to the recipient in the destination city. After that, you confirm the delivery on Parcelane and leave a review.
Stay in touch in the chat: it makes it easier to rearrange the meeting with the recipient if plans shift. Your review helps the next sender choose a reliable traveler.
How to avoid scams
Most scams rely on three things: urgency, prepayment and moving the conversation off the platform. If you see even one of them, stop.
Warning signs for senders
- The traveler asks for prepayment outside the platform, "to reserve space" or "for baggage", before you have met.
- They suggest moving to a messenger "because it is easier".
- They insist on meeting somewhere deserted or refuse to meet in person.
- The profile is empty, the story does not add up, the trip dates keep changing.
Warning signs for travelers
- The parcel is sealed, taped or vacuum-packed, and you are asked not to open it.
- "You do not need to know what is inside", "just say it is yours", "do not declare it".
- Powders, liquids or loose pills, an unusual smell, a double bottom.
- A suspiciously high reward, pressure and rush.
What to do if something is wrong
- Do not hand over money and do not take the item. You owe no one an explanation.
- Cancel the offer and press "Report" in the chat or profile. We review reports of possible fraud or prohibited items within 24 hours and may hide the related request or trip right away.
- Messages in the Parcelane chat are moderated. That is one more reason to stay there: we cannot see conversations outside the platform and cannot help sort them out.
What you cannot send
You cannot send anything that is prohibited in the departure, transit or destination country or by the airline's rules. Our rules also explicitly list weapons, drugs, explosive substances, counterfeits, other people's documents and cash above the limits.
Medicines, alcohol, tobacco, food and electronics may go only within the limits and with documents. More on this in the article on what you cannot send with a traveler and in the full list of prohibited and restricted items.
Checklist before the handover
